Surface Design
For my winter art show project I decided to make four mugs with surface texture and designs. I made the mugs by throwing cylinders on the wheel. I then hand built handles and connected them to each mug. Once I trimmed and smoothed each mug I carved a design into each mug using a needle tool and other carving tools. Each mug has a different intricate design which makes them all independent pieces, but I decided to use all blue glazes. This makes all the mugs cohesive. Each mug has a different blue glaze, and I made the inside and outside different colors. The reason I made mugs was because I knew it would be practical for me and my family. I wanted to make something that would be used. I also wanted to make something that would challenge me. The hardest part for me was definitely making the handles, but as I did it more and more it got easier. I have always liked the look and feel of ceramic plates and bowls when they have some sort of surface texture on them. I thought it would be interesting to add surface texture to mugs as well. When finding what I wanted to carve into my mugs I looked online, but made each design somewhat my own. I wanted them to be unique in the texture and form of my mugs. Something I would like you all to take away from this piece is the designs and other aspects of my mugs when you look at them.
